"Beauty," you ask. "What could be beautiful about a bunch of rocks?"
Stay tuned.
Perhaps if you looked down and saw a little flower like this at your feet, you might begin to understand...
Perhaps if you saw rocks precariously balanced on a point where they have rested for centuries would you realize that there is something special here: something ethereal: something that abides in a subtle, spiritual space where, as the Celts sometimes say, the veil is thin between the material world in which we live, and the eternal, life-centred and life-giving embrace of the beauty of the natural world.
Here is life at its most resilient: its most persistent: its most inventive...not to mention beautiful. This is where you will listen in on the ancient conversation between sea and stone, where the glaciers, ten thousand years ago, rolled in and extinguished all life, scraping the land clear of topsoil, and scattering on whim, on their retreat, huge boulders across the face of the barren land, boulders from faraway places, some weighing many tons.
Today we are priviledged to be able to walk through this living, breathing, hard-wrought ecosystem, now regarded by many as sacred, and as one of the most stunning but unsung beauty spots in all of Nova Scotia.
It goes by the unappealing and unimaginative name of "The Peggy's Cove Preservation Area." Climbers call it "The Land of Confusion." Perhaps that is why most people pay scant attention to it, and that is why you will most probably spend a half day hiking its thousand glorious acres, and few people if any will you see while you are there.
But the stunning majesty of this place will forge a connection to the beauty of the natural world that will reach into your very core and bid you consider the words of Thoreau when he wrote, "Life is so full of genius, full of divinity that not a snowflake escapes its fashioning hand." True: right down to the bug-eating pitcher plant at your left.
Scraped clean by glaciers ten thousand years ago, the area is dotted with huge boulders, some weighing many tons, some balanced precariously on smaller rocks they happened to land on, all surrounded by hardy, persistent little plants of a most glorious kind, whose dress and color and sheer ability to survive cause one to pause in awe and bathe, in wonder, in the miracle of it all.
Only scattered, unmarked paths here and there lead through the area, which for the most part, has not known a human footprint since the glaciers retreated ten thousand years ago.
