The Fundy tides are among the most miraculous and amazing in the world. Rising and falling 40 feet or more, the result is spellbinding with an entire harbour or bay emptying out before your very eyes.

Some 3,600 billion cubic feet of water pass in and out
bay twice each day, leaving boats, even very large ones, stranded high and dry on the sand.

There are various vantage points from which to view this unique phenomenon. We have a suggested itinerary that we provide to our guests, available on request and complete with ideas on how best to view the tides, where the best scenic drives are, where to stop for lunch, etc.

We can also provide buckets and shovels for those who wish to dig clams.

We suggest viewing the tides from the shores of Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, a warm and welcoming part of the province where fresh produce abounds and the old fashioned make-your-own-change jar sits by the fresh fruit at the roadside, reflecting the openness and honesty of the Valley’s long time residents.

We also suggest a visit to Grand Pre Wines, either on your way to or from the Minas Basin area. Stroll the cobblestone walkways of meticulously kept grounds, sample the wines and stay for lunch.

If you have a little time and an interest in history, we suggest a visit to Prescott House, and elegant old Georgian mansion, home of one Charles Prescott, a horticulturist with a passionate interest in the apple industry.

Or you might enjoy MacDonald House, a one-of-a-kind structure that celebrates the life of one Charles MacDonald, a Nova Scotian of unique character and ability whose small, colorful cottages resemble rather large mushrooms and whose gracious and sensitive drawings of his ports of call on world voyages reflected the inner thoughts and philosophy of this most unusual person.

Charles MacDonald worked with cement in unusual ways. His sculpture at the left is one of his many original works.

We also recommend a visit to Tangled Garden. This place is just what it says, although in a delightfully whimsical and organized sense. Featuring herbs of all sorts and unique jams, jellies and vinegars and items crafted from local natural materials, Tangled Garden delights the senses, teases the appetite.

This is a comfortable day trip to make from Oceanstone, taking about an hour and fifteen minutes to get to Port Williams, your first observation point.
